The American Community Association (AMCOM) is seeking a highly qualified and motivated General Manager to oversee all aspects of AMCOM operations.  The General Manager is a customer service focused position which is accountable to both the general membership and the Board of Directors and has overall administrative control over AMCOM services, facilities, and financial records. 

AMCOM is a non-profit managing community services (commissary, cafeteria, events, transportation, recreation) to enhance the quality of life for the United States Embassy community in Addis Ababa. A volunteer Board oversees operations for effectiveness and financial sustainability. This is an AMCOM position, not employment with the United States Embassy or United States Government. Compensation, benefits, and employment terms are determined by AMCOM, differing from locally employed United States Embassy staff.

AMCOM services include, but are not limited to:

  • Commissary operations
  • Cafeteria and food service
  • School bus program
  • Event planning and member activities
  • Laundry/dry cleaning services
  • Recreational Facilities (Pool, Gym, Tennis Court)
  • Residential Internet Services

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Financial 
    • Adhere strictly to the AMCOM Accounting Manual and financial policies. 
    • In conjunction with the AMCOM board, prepare a yearly budget for approval by January 15th each year.
    • Provide the Board of Directors with monthly status reports, including income/loss statements, balance sheets, operational conditions, and trends.
    • Maintain complete and accurate records of all financial benefits provided to employees including all computations related to the payment of salaries, bonuses, gratuities, deductions or withholding for payroll taxes, vacation pay or sick pay. Prepare and forward all reports and payments to the appropriate authorities.
    • Manage payroll, benefits, petty cash, banking, and vendor payments.
    • Maintain the general ledger using QuickBooks, prepare annual financial statements, and support audits and Board reporting.
    • Provide clear and concise reports of the financial condition of each segment of the Association’s operations and reasons for any trend change.
    • Audit the Association’s payables and prepare documentation for payment to submit to the Board of Directors for approval and signing of checks. 
    • Carry out banking deposit procedures and petty cash transfers; maintain the check register and reconcile the bank accounts manually and with the  QuickBooks™ accounting system. 
  2. Staff Management and Board Interaction
    • Adhere to policies and procedures and the AMCOM Employee Handbook.
    • Foster a positive, professional, and collaborative work environment. 
    • Provide daily supervision, guidance, and leadership to all AMCOM staff.
    • Actively monitor customer service levels by all staff.  Conduct frequent customer care training to ensure proper service is provided to customers. 
    • Hire, evaluate, assign, and when necessary, discipline or terminate staff in accordance with AMCOM policies.
    • Supervise and delegate authority to the various employees and make changes necessary for the successful and efficient operation of the Association.
    • Create strong communication and coordination within AMCOM staff and services as well as external communication to AMCOM Board and membership.
    • Attend monthly meetings of the Board of Directors. Consult with the Board when contemplating changes in policy that may affect any or all operations, suggest or recommend options, and direct the implementation of any changes.
  3. Commissary Operations
    • Ensure smooth daily operations of two commissary locations. 
    • Requisition, receive, classify, price, and track merchandise sold.
    • Manage inventory through accurate forecasting, timely ordering, and adherence to first-in, first-out (FIFO practices)
    • Source goods locally and internationally to ensure product availability, quality, and competitive pricing.
    • Identify and evaluate new vendors and regularly review existing suppliers. 
    • In conjunction with the United States Embassy General Services Office, assume operational responsibility for procurement, customs clearance, property management, and maintenance of the commissary
  4. Cafeteria 
    • Oversee daily cafeteria operations to ensure high food quality, cleanliness, safety, and customer satisfaction.
    • Lead menu planning and development, incorporating member feedback, cost considerations, and seasonal availability. 
    • Manage food inventory, ordering, storage, and waste reduction.
    • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to ensure reliable delivery and quality standards. 
    • Work closely with the Embassy Health and Facilities Units to ensure compliance with applicable health, safety, and U.S. hygiene standards.
    • Support special meals, catering, and food service needs for AMCOM events. 
  5. School Bus Service
    • Ensure daily operational readiness of the school bus fleet for morning and afternoon pickup. 
    • Plan and organize routes to and from designated locations in the most efficient manner.
    • Ensure all children are accounted for each day and reach their destination at the scheduled times. 
    • Liaise with the Regional Security Office on the overall security situation in Addis.
    • Exhibit emergency readiness as needed,
    • With board oversight, purchase, maintain, and dispose of vehicles as needed and per the capital improvement plan. 
  6. Event Planning and Community Engagement
    • Coordinate with the Community Liaison Office to plan, organize, and oversee AMCOM community events and activities.
    • Coordinate logistics, catering, equipment, staffing, and vendor communications for events.
    • Work closely with Board and subcommittees to align events with community priorities and budgets.
    • Ensure regular and timely communication to members regarding events, services, and operational updates. 
  7. General Services
    • Oversee daily operations of member services including:

    1. Residential Internet Services
      1. Vegetable order services
      2. Tennis Services
      3. Swim Instructor/Lifeguard
    2. Ensure all services are delivered to the highest U.S. standards of reliability, quality, and customer service.

Qualifications:

  • Required:
    1. Bachelor’s degree.
      1. Minimum 5 years of experience in related fields, preferably in the United States or with U.S. customers (customer service, hospitality, retail operations, or food service).
      2. Must possess excellent English and Amharic verbal and written communication skills.
      3. Proven ability to work effectively across multiple teams, staff, vendors, committees, and a diverse American and Ethiopian community.
      4. Experience in food service operations, with international menu experience as a plus.
    2. Desired:
      1. Knowledge of inventory management, fleet operations, logistics, and facilities management.
      2. Knowledge of U.S. brand-name household products.
      3. Prior work experience in Ethiopia.
      4. Excellent computer skills in Google Workspace Suite (Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Forms, Google Drive, Gmail)
      5. Working knowledge of QuickBooks™and accounting software preferred.
      6. Familiarity with Shopify.
