About This Role
This is a hands-on infrastructure engineering role with Birrama Digital Commerce PLC, a local e-commerce player scaling its technology backbone in Addis Ababa. You will be the person who keeps production systems alive—managing Linux environments, private cloud setups, and container orchestration while automating deployments and hardening security. It suits an engineer who prefers troubleshooting real-world failures over designing theoretical architectures, and who thrives in the mix of local infrastructure constraints and modern cloud tools.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The emphasis on "strong practical experience with local/private cloud infrastructure" signals that this company operates in hybrid or on-premise environments—likely due to cost, data residency, or connectivity realities in Ethiopia. They are not just looking for someone who can spin up AWS instances; they need an engineer who has wrestled with physical servers, limited bandwidth, or power interruptions, and still kept services reliable. The 3-5 year mid-level range implies they want someone who has owned production incidents end-to-end, not a junior who needs hand-holding or a senior who delegates.
How to Approach This Application
Do not lead with your certification list—lead with a story of a production crisis you solved. Describe a specific incident where you diagnosed a failing Kubernetes cluster, a broken CI/CD pipeline, or a security breach, and explain what you did step-by-step. Highlight any experience with local hosting providers, VMware, OpenStack, or on-prem Linux farms, as this will differentiate you from cloud-only applicants. Also, mention how you monitor systems (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana) and how you balance uptime with the reality of intermittent power or network issues in Addis.
Who This Role Suits
This role is ideal for a pragmatic DevOps engineer who enjoys ownership and can navigate the unique challenges of running infrastructure in Ethiopia. Competition will be moderate—strong local candidates are scarce, but those with genuine hands-on private cloud experience will stand out clearly.
Birrama Digital Commerce PLC is seeking a skilled and hands-on DevOps & Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to manage, secure, automate, and continuously improve the company's technology infrastructure.
The successful candidate will work across Linux systems, local/private and public cloud environments, networking, containerized applications, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure security, monitoring, and observability.
This is a practical engineering role suited for someone who is comfortable working directly with production environments, troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues, automating deployments, and ensuring that systems and applications remain secure, reliable, scalable, and highly available.
