About This Role

This is a field-based protection role with PAPDA, a local organization working in pastoralist communities, meaning you will be operating in a context where access to services is limited and cultural sensitivities around GBV are significant. The position is based in Liben woreda of East Borena zone, a remote pastoralist area, so the role suits someone prepared for challenging field conditions and community-level engagement rather than office-based coordination work. Reporting to a Protection Officer suggests you will be part of a small protection team, likely working alongside community mobilizers and health actors. The 12-month contract reflects typical donor-funded project cycles, so renewal will depend on continued funding and performance.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The mid-level seniority with a 3–5 year expectation signals that PAPDA needs someone who can manage cases independently without close daily supervision, since remote field locations often mean limited direct oversight. The emphasis on survivor-centered approaches and international standards implies they are looking for someone already trained in GBV guiding principles — not someone who needs to learn confidentiality, safety planning, and informed consent on the job. Given the pastoralist context, the ideal candidate likely has prior experience in humanitarian or development settings outside major cities, and can navigate community gatekeepers while maintaining ethical boundaries. Fluency in the local language of the area is almost certainly an unwritten requirement, even if not stated.

How to Approach This Application

Your application should demonstrate that you understand the difference between general social work and GBV case management — emphasize specific experience with safety planning, referral pathways, and psychosocial support, not just community sensitization. Since PAPDA works with pastoralist communities, any prior experience in similar settings (mobile populations, low-resource areas, or conflict-affected regions) will set you apart. In your cover letter, show awareness of the ethical tensions in GBV work — how you handle confidentiality when community members expect to know details, or how you balance survivor autonomy with safety concerns. Avoid generic statements about "passion for helping women"; instead, reference concrete examples of cases you managed and how you navigated complex decisions.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

This role is best suited for someone with hands-on GBV case management experience in humanitarian settings who is genuinely comfortable living and working in a remote pastoralist area — not someone looking for a stepping stone into urban-based NGO work. Competition will likely be moderate, as the location deters many qualified candidates, but those who do apply from within Oromia or with local language skills will have a strong advantage.
