About This Role

This entry-level health officer position with Empowerment for Development places you directly in community-level health programming in a challenging, semi-arid region. You will be expected to implement health interventions targeting vulnerable groups, including internally displaced persons and migrants, rather than managing clinical cases. The role suits a recent graduate who is ready to operate in a field-based setting with limited infrastructure and who values hands-on impact over office-based work.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The listing calls for a fresh graduate, which signals that ED is investing in developing local talent rather than requiring prior experience. The emphasis will likely be on your foundational knowledge of public health principles, your adaptability to remote field conditions, and your ability to communicate with diverse community members. Strong candidates will demonstrate practical problem-solving skills and cultural sensitivity, as the role involves working directly with pastoralist and displaced populations in Afar.

How to Approach This Application

Your application should highlight any community engagement or fieldwork you conducted during your studies—even if informal—to show you understand the realities of rural health programming. Emphasize your willingness to relocate to Semera and your familiarity with the local context, including any Afari language skills. The employer likely prioritizes candidates who show genuine commitment to serving marginalized communities over those with polished academic credentials alone.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

This role is best suited for a resilient, mission-driven fresh graduate who is comfortable with basic living conditions and eager to build a career in humanitarian health. Competition is moderate, as the remote location may deter some applicants but attracts those passionate about NGO fieldwork.
