About This Role
This entry-level Nutrition Officer position with Empowerment for Development (ED) places you at the frontline of community health intervention in a challenging, drought-prone region. Based in Semera, Afar, the role is ideal for a fresh graduate eager to apply theoretical knowledge in real humanitarian settings, working directly with vulnerable populations including IDPs and women. The national NGO context means you will likely handle field-level assessments, nutrition screenings, and community education, making this a strong launchpad for a career in public health or emergency nutrition.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
While the listing targets fresh graduates, the implied profile is someone with academic grounding in nutrition, public health, or a related natural science, combined with a demonstrated willingness to work in remote, resource-limited environments. The employer likely values adaptability, basic data collection skills, and fluency in local languages (Afar or Amharic) over extensive experience. This role is designed for candidates who can learn on the job and handle the physical and logistical demands of field travel in Afar’s semi-arid climate.
How to Approach This Application
To stand out, emphasize any practicum, internship, or volunteer work done in community health, even if brief. Highlight your understanding of Ethiopia’s nutrition challenges—such as stunting, acute malnutrition, and the effects of drought—and show familiarity with NGO protocols like MUAC screening or CMAM. Since this is a national NGO, demonstrate cultural sensitivity and a genuine commitment to rural development; avoid generic statements about “passion” and instead reference specific local contexts you’re aware of.
Who This Role Suits
This role is best suited for a fresh graduate who is resilient, comfortable with remote fieldwork, and motivated by public health impact rather than high salary or urban amenities. Given the entry-level nature and specific location, competition is moderate but strong for candidates who already live in or have ties to the Afar region.
