Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) Officer
Empowerment for DevelopmentAbout This Role
This is a field-based role that combines data collection with program accountability in a remote, hard-to-reach location. As a MEAL Officer at a national NGO working across multiple humanitarian and development sectors, you will be the bridge between program implementation and evidence-based decision-making. The position suits a junior professional who is comfortable with frequent travel to project sites, has a strong attention to detail, and wants to build a career in monitoring systems rather than direct service delivery.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The employer is seeking someone who can independently manage data collection tools, conduct assessments, and support reporting under minimal supervision — not just a data entry clerk. The implied profile is a methodical and ethical professional who understands how to track outcomes in fragile settings, and who can maintain accountability mechanisms like feedback channels for vulnerable communities. Practical experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis tools, even if gained through internship or volunteer roles, is likely more valued here than years of experience alone.
How to Approach This Application
Focus your cover letter on specific examples of designing or using monitoring tools, such as surveys or focus group discussions, in rural or displacement-affected contexts. Highlight any familiarity with Afar region or pastoralist communities, as local knowledge is a significant advantage for logistics and community engagement. Emphasize your understanding of confidentiality and ethical data handling, especially when working with IDPs, women, and children — this signals alignment with the NGO’s protection-focused mandate.
Who This Role Suits
This role is best suited for a junior MEAL professional who is resilient, self-motivated, and eager to gain deep field experience in a challenging but impactful environment. Competition will be moderate, as the remote location may deter some applicants, but those with prior NGO fieldwork or monitoring experience will stand out.
