About This Role
This role places you at the operational core of a high-stakes humanitarian program in a post-conflict zone. As Operations Manager for Humanitarian Mine Action in Shire, you will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the safe and effective clearance of landmines and explosive remnants of war—work that directly enables displaced communities to return and rebuild. It is suited for a seasoned project operations leader who thrives in insecure, logistically demanding environments and is comfortable managing both technical teams and compliance with international standards. The Danish Refugee Council's recent entry into mine action in Ethiopia means you will help shape systems from the ground up, rather than stepping into a routine operation.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The implied profile is someone who has managed multi-site, safety-critical field operations in fragile or conflict-affected settings, likely with prior experience in mine action, humanitarian logistics, or military engineering. While the listing does not specify a technical demining background, the role demands proven ability to enforce rigorous safety protocols, coordinate with government authorities and local communities, and adapt global standards to a volatile local context. Strong people management and crisis decision-making are non-negotiable—you will be overseeing teams under severe physical and psychological stress.
How to Approach This Application
Your application must demonstrate that you understand the unique operational realities of mine action in a post-war setting—not just general project management. In your cover letter, highlight specific examples of managing field teams in insecure areas, implementing safety procedures that prevented incidents, and coordinating with military or civil protection actors. Since DRC emphasizes compliance with Ethiopian and global standards, mention any familiarity with International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) or similar frameworks. Keep your CV to three pages and lead with the most relevant operational roles.
Who This Role Suits
This role is best suited for an operations professional with at least five years in humanitarian or military field operations, ideally with direct experience in mine action or explosive ordnance management. Given the specialized nature and recent program launch, competition will be moderate but candidates without proven field safety leadership in high-risk environments are unlikely to advance.
Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly qualified Operations Manager – Humanitarian Mine Action for our operations in our Shire Field Office.
