About This Role

This is a field-based coordination role with a national NGO working at the intersection of humanitarian relief, development, and peacebuilding in one of Ethiopia's most operationally challenging regions. The coordinator serves as the operational backbone of a drought, flood, and displacement response project — translating plans made at the regional level into daily action across Afambo and Amibara woredas. It suits someone who has already cut their teeth in field coordination and now wants deeper responsibility in a locally led organization rather than a large international NGO bureaucracy.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The five-to-eight-year seniority band signals that Nexus is not looking for someone to train into the role — they need a coordinator who has already managed field teams, juggled donor timelines, and made judgment calls when headquarters is hours away. The emphasis on the HDP Nexus approach implies they want someone comfortable operating across what are traditionally separate silos: emergency response, livelihood recovery, and community dialogue. Candidates whose experience is purely emergency-focused or purely development-focused may find the integrated framing unfamiliar. The posting's specificity about travel to the regional capital suggests the employer values someone who can represent the project credibly in coordination meetings, not just manage a field office.

How to Approach This Application

Lead with concrete examples of field coordination in pastoralist or agro-pastoralist contexts — Afar's operating environment is not generic rural Ethiopia, and demonstrating that you understand its seasonal, clan, and access dynamics will separate you immediately. Since Nexus Ethiopia frames itself as a localization-focused national organization, emphasize instances where you strengthened local partner capacity or worked through community structures rather than around them. Your application should make clear you can handle the logistical isolation of Amibara/Afambo while still reporting upward and representing the project externally when needed.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

Best suited to an Ethiopian professional with prior humanitarian or resilience programming experience in lowland regions who is genuinely willing to live and work in Afar, not just visit. Given the location, the integrated programming model, and the one-year contract, the applicant pool is likely modest — strong field credentials plus demonstrated comfort with hardship postings will put a candidate well ahead.
