About This Role

This is a protection-focused mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) position based in Assosa, where IRC runs programmes serving both displaced populations and host communities in a region that has seen repeated displacement crises. The seniority signals that the holder will carry technical weight — shaping how MHPSS is delivered, not simply delivering it — while coordinating with protection colleagues whose work overlaps heavily with psychosocial wellbeing. Because the posting is restricted to current and recently departed IRC staff, it is effectively an internal promotion or lateral move rather than an open market hire.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The five-to-eight-year band tells you IRC wants someone who has already run MHPSS activities in a humanitarian setting long enough to anticipate problems before they escalate, and who understands how protection and psychosocial support intersect in practice rather than on paper. Expect the selection panel to weigh field experience in conflict-affected or displacement contexts more heavily than formal credentials, though a clinical or counselling background will likely separate strong candidates from adequate ones. The internal-only restriction also implies familiarity with IRC's own systems, donor reporting rhythms, and safeguarding standards is treated as a genuine qualification, not a formality.

How to Approach This Application

Since everyone applying already knows the organisation, your application should focus on what you have delivered — caseloads managed, teams supervised, referral pathways built, coordination with government or partner agencies — rather than on describing IRC's mandate back to the reviewers. Speak directly to how you have handled the practical tensions of MHPSS work in Ethiopia: resource gaps, cultural adaptation of approaches, staff wellbeing, and working alongside protection teams. If you have experience in Benishangul Gumuz or similar low-infrastructure settings, make that visible early, as regional familiarity is likely a deciding factor.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

Best suited to an existing IRC protection or health officer with several years of MHPSS delivery behind them who is ready to step into a more technical, coordination-heavy role. Competition will be limited to internal candidates but still meaningful, since the pool consists of colleagues with directly comparable experience and the location is a hardship posting that not everyone will pursue.

Eligibility: Current IRC staff and former IRC staff who separated from the organization within the past 6 months.

Background of IRC:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future.
