About This Role

This is a senior technical leadership role embedded within the Ministry of Agriculture, not a typical software development position. You will be architecting and building the digital backbone that supports Ethiopia’s agricultural transformation agenda, working on systems that directly affect smallholder farmers and national food security. It suits an experienced backend developer who thrives on high-impact public sector work and is comfortable navigating government structures while delivering enterprise-grade technical solutions.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The listing implies a need for someone who can independently design scalable backend systems, manage data integration across multiple government platforms, and ensure robust security and performance under resource constraints. The seniority level suggests you will also mentor junior developers, advise on technical strategy, and bridge the gap between policy goals and technical implementation. They are seeking a problem-solver who understands both modern backend architecture and the realities of working within Ethiopia’s public sector digital ecosystem.

How to Approach This Application

Emphasize your experience with large-scale data systems, API development, and integration with external services—especially in agriculture, logistics, or government contexts. Highlight any work you have done in low-bandwidth environments or with offline-capable applications, as rural connectivity is a key challenge. Prepare to demonstrate how you have previously translated complex business or policy requirements into technical specifications, as the role requires close collaboration with non-technical stakeholders at the ministry.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

This role is best suited for a senior backend developer who is passionate about using technology for national development and is comfortable with the slower pace and bureaucratic layers of government work. It is likely to be moderately competitive, attracting both experienced developers from the private sector and those already within the public service ecosystem.

Background:

The ATI’s work is centred on improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers (SHFs) across the country for improved income, inclusiveness, resilience, and sustainability. The ATI works to transform the agriculture sector in Ethiopia by conducting policy and analytical studies, providing technical implementation support and capacity building, coordinating platforms to better integrate partners and projects and designing and directly leading several innovative/pilot interventions.

The Institute joins forces with various stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, farmers, and development partners, to support the implementation of agricultural development programs and initiatives. In addition, the ATI collaborates with national and international partners to facilitate knowledge exchange and learning opportunities.
