About This Role

This role is about integrating climate adaptation directly into WASH infrastructure delivery in a remote, resource-constrained setting. It suits a mid-career water engineer or environmental health professional who is comfortable working in Gambela’s unique context, where flooding and drought cycles directly affect water access. You will not just build systems—you will make them resilient to climate shocks while ensuring they serve women and marginalized groups equitably.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The employer is looking for someone who has moved beyond basic WASH implementation into climate-sensitive design. You need hands-on experience with solar pumping and water conservation structures, but also the ability to navigate government coordination and community engagement. The profile sought is a technical problem-solver who can adapt standard WASH solutions to Gambela’s hydrological realities and can manage quality assurance across multiple remote sites.

How to Approach This Application

Emphasize any specific experience you have with solar-powered water systems or flood/drought mitigation structures in low-resource settings. Highlight your ability to work with diverse stakeholders—from contractors to local government—and show you understand gender-transformative approaches in WASH. A strong application will include examples of how you ensured sustainability in previous projects, not just completion.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

This role is best suited for an experienced WASH professional who thrives in field-based, multi-stakeholder environments and wants to deepen their climate resilience expertise. It is moderately competitive, as it requires a niche skill set in climate-proof WASH infrastructure.

The Opportunity

The WASH Officer provides technical leadership in climate-resilient water supply systems, flood and drought risk management, and WASH governance. S/he is responsible for the design, supervision, and quality assurance of solar-powered water supply systems, flood control and water conservation structures, as well as the rehabilitation and solarization of non-functional water schemes.

The post holder will report to the Project Manager (based in the GPA) and serve as the technical lead for the delivery of climate-resilient, gender-transformative, and sustainable WASH infrastructure and services under the project. Work closely with engineers, contractors, government institutions, and target communities to ensure coordinated design, implementation, and quality assurance of WASH interventions. Contribute to and influence project-wide sustainability and climate adaptation outcomes through high-quality technical leadership.

Lead and oversee water supply studies, system design, construction supervision, and WASH governance, including the humanitarian WASH component of the integrated Climate Proof Water4Food Project in Gambella Region. Ensure delivery of results in line with approved project plans, targets, and objectives, overseeing implementation across all stages of the project cycle.

Strengthen collaboration with government sector offices by fostering partnerships, supporting capacity development, and facilitating the achievement of project results. Lead the implementation of multi-purpose water supply systems for domestic and productive use, ensuring sustainable access to safe water for drinking, sanitation, hygiene, and agriculture, thereby improving livelihoods and resilience of target communities.
