About This Role

This is a hands-on field role at a Chinese-owned energy company's Ethiopian branch, working in one of the country's most remote regions. The rigger is the person on the ground who makes crane lifts safe — inspecting gear, balancing loads, and directing operators through signals and radio. It suits someone with solid field experience in heavy industry or construction who is comfortable with fly-in/fly-out style rotations and working far from major cities.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The profile being sought is a safety-conscious technician who can work independently without constant supervision, since Ogaden is not a place where you can easily call for backup or spare parts. The emphasis on inspection and load calculation suggests they want someone who catches problems before the lift, not someone who just follows orders. Mid-level seniority with 3-5 years implies they expect you to have already seen enough lifts to develop judgment — knowing when a sling is marginal or a load is off-balance.

How to Approach This Application

Lead with your safety record and any certifications (rigging, lifting, HSE) because energy companies in remote sites treat compliance as non-negotiable. Mention specific equipment and load types you have handled, and be ready to describe a lift you stopped or corrected because something was wrong — that story matters more than a list of duties. If you have worked in remote or camp-based settings before, say so explicitly; the employer is likely worried about retention in Ogaden.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

Best suited for experienced riggers from oil and gas, mining, or large-scale construction who can handle isolation and harsh conditions. Competition may be moderate, but the remote location narrows the pool significantly for those who are genuinely willing to commit.

Job Purpose

The rigger is responsible to safely prepare, attach, secure, and guide loads during crane lifting operations, ensuring that all lifting activities are performed according to approved lifting plans, company procedures, and applicable health and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Inspect slings, shackles, hooks, wire ropes, chains, lifting beams, and other rigging accessories before use.
  2. Select and use appropriate rigging equipment based on the load's weight, dimensions, lifting points, and centre of gravity, within the scope of training and authorization.
  3. Attach, secure, and balance loads correctly before crane lifting operations.
  4. Communicate effectively with crane operators using standard hand signals and approved radio communication.
  5. Guide crane operators during lifting, lowering, slewing, and positioning operations while maintaining clear visibility or approved communication.
  6. Assist in lifting, moving, loading, unloading, and positioning equipment, pipes, steel structures, machinery, and other project materials.
  7. Verify that loads are properly secured and that lifting accessories are suitable and within their rated working load limits.
  8. Establish and maintain exclusion zones around lifting operations and prevent unauthorized personnel from entering hazardous areas.
  9. Follow approved lifting plans, method statements, risk assessments, permit-to-work requirements, and toolbox talk instructions.
  10. Monitor loads during lifting operations and immediately communicate any instability, obstruction, equipment defect, or unsafe condition.
  11. Stop or call for the suspension of lifting activities whenever an unsafe condition arises.
  12. Identify, tag, and report defective or damaged rigging equipment and ensure it is not used until properly cleared.
  13. Coordinate with crane operators, lifting supervisors, signalers, and other work teams to ensure safe and efficient lifting operations.
  14. Maintain proper storage and housekeeping of rigging equipment and accessories.
  15. Participate in safety meetings, inspections, incident investigations, and required technical training.
  16. Perform other related duties assigned by the supervisor within the scope of the position.

Education

  • TVET certificate, technical qualification, or relevant occupational competency training in rigging or lifting operations.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in crane rigging operations, preferably in industrial, construction, oil and gas, or energy projects.

Certification:

  • Valid rigging competency certificate or recognized training qualification, as required by the project.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Understanding of crane lifting operations, rigging accessories, working load limits, load balance, lifting signals, and lifting safety procedures.
