About This Role

This is a plant-level operational leadership role, not a desk job. You are the person responsible for ensuring Repi Soap & Detergent’s manufacturing never halts due to wastewater bottlenecks, while keeping the company on the right side of Ethiopian environmental regulators. It suits a chemical or environmental engineer who has moved beyond pure technical work into owning compliance outcomes and coordinating across shifts, maintenance teams, and external authorities.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The profile sought is someone who has physically run an ETP, not just designed one on paper. Five to eight years in a manufacturing environment tells us they want a professional who has seen upset conditions—biomass die-offs, chemical overdosing, pump failures—and knows how to stabilize systems under pressure. Familiarity with Ethiopian EPA standards and local discharge limits will be treated as a baseline, not a bonus.

How to Approach This Application

Do not submit a generic CV. Structure your application around specific compliance wins: reduced BOD/COD readings, successful audit outcomes, or a process change that cut chemical costs. The employer is likely nervous about regulatory fines and production stoppages, so emphasize any experience you have with preventive maintenance scheduling and emergency response drills. Quantify your past ETP capacity in cubic meters per day and name the treatment methods you have operated.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

This is a role for an experienced, hands-on engineer who thrives on operational reliability rather than strategy development. Competition will be moderate—strong candidates with soap or FMCG wastewater experience will have a clear edge over general environmental officers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • ETP Operations Management: Lead the daily operation of the Effluent Treatment Plant; Ensure continuous and efficient treatment of industrial wastewater; Monitor and optimize all treatment processes to meet discharge standards; Develop and implement operating procedures and work instructions; Ensure uninterrupted ETP operation to support manufacturing activities.
  • Environmental Compliance: Ensure full compliance with environmental regulations and company standards; Monitor treated water quality and ensure compliance with regulatory discharge limits; Coordinate environmental inspections and regulatory audits; Maintain all statutory environmental records and reports; Liaise with environmental regulatory authorities when required.
  • Process Optimization: Optimize chemical consumption and treatment efficiency; Monitor treatment parameters including pH, COD, BOD, TSS, dissolved oxygen, sludge concentration, and flow rates; Drive initiatives to reduce water consumption and improve wastewater treatment performance; Support water recycling and sustainability initiatives where applicable.
  • Asset Management: Ensure reliable operation of pumps, blowers, mixers, clarifiers, filters, dosing systems, and instrumentation; Develop preventive and predictive maintenance plans; Coordinate with the Maintenance Department to minimize equipment downtime; Monitor critical spare parts availability.
  • Laboratory & Quality Control: Ensure routine sampling and laboratory analysis of influent and treated effluent; Review laboratory results and implement corrective actions when deviations occur; Ensure calibration of laboratory and process monitoring equipment; Maintain accurate analytical records.
  • Health, Safety & Environment (HSE): Promote a strong safety culture within the ETP; Ensure compliance with all HSE policies and procedures; Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation measures; Ensure proper chemical handling, storage, and PPE compliance; Investigate environmental and safety incidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, coach, and develop ETP operators and technicians; Prepare shift schedules and allocate responsibilities; Conduct performance evaluations and identify training needs; Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Budget & Cost Control: Prepare and manage the ETP operating budget; Control chemical, utility, maintenance, and operating costs; Evaluate cost-saving opportunities without compromising compliance; Monitor supplier and contractor performance.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly ETP performance reports; Maintain operational records, maintenance logs, chemical consumption records, and compliance documentation; Report environmental performance KPIs to management.
  • Continuous Improvement: Lead environmental improvement projects; Support ISO 14001, ISO 45001, GMP, and 5S initiatives; Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for process failures and environmental incidents; Implement best practices in wastewater treatment and resource conservation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial wastewater treatment or environmental management; At least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role; Experience in FMCG, soap and detergent, edible oil, chemical, or manufacturing industries is preferred.
