About This Role

This is a hospital-based clinical post embedded in a government facility, where you would be the reference point for newborn care in a region that has historically had limited specialist coverage. The funding structure—a donor-backed project supporting a public hospital—means the job blends direct patient care with capacity-building for local health workers. It suits a clinician who is comfortable being the most senior neonatal voice in the room and who values measurable impact on newborn survival over prestige or comfort.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The mid-level framing here is about demonstrated hands-on neonatal experience, not years served in a teaching hospital. The employer is looking for someone who can function with limited subspecialty back-up, since Assosa is not a setting where you can easily refer complex cases onward. The profile sought is therefore part-clinician, part-mentor: someone whose experience translates into protocols, training, and confident decision-making under resource constraints.

How to Approach This Application

Your application should lead with concrete neonatal case exposure—specific conditions managed, procedures performed, outcomes improved—rather than a list of past employers. Because the role serves refugee, IDP, and host communities, any prior work in humanitarian, displacement, or underserved settings is a strong differentiator and should be made explicit. Expect the selection panel to weigh adaptability to a peripheral region heavily; addressing your willingness and readiness to live and work in Assosa directly is worth doing.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

Best suited to a neonatologist or senior pediatrician with neonatal specialization who has already worked in low-resource or humanitarian health settings. Competition is likely moderate—the location narrows the pool considerably, but candidates motivated by the project's equity mission will find this a strong match.

Under the EU-funded INTEPA project, MTI provides financial support to strengthen Assosa General Hospital's maternal and newborn healthcare capacity. The position aims to improve access to specialized neonatal care for newborns from refugee, internally displaced, and host communities, contributing to improved newborn survival and quality of care.

Job Summary

The Neonatologist will provide specialized care for newborns, particularly premature, low-birth-weight, and critically ill infants, contributing to improved newborn survival and strengthened neonatal services at Assosa General Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage neonatal conditions, including prematurity, neonatal sepsis, birth asphyxia, respiratory distress, and low birth weight.
  • Provide specialized care for critically ill newborns and oversee neonatal stabilization and resuscitation.
  • Support neonatal intensive care and special newborn care services in line with available facilities and resources.
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, paediatricians, midwives, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to improve maternal and newborn outcomes.
  • Promote evidence-based neonatal care, infection prevention, breastfeeding, kangaroo mother care, and family-centered care.
  • Provide clinical mentorship and capacity building for neonatal care staff.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and adhere to national guidelines, patient safety standards, and professional ethics.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from a recognized and accredited university.
  • Recognized postgraduate specialization in Neonatology, or in Paediatrics with recognized additional specialization or advanced training in Neonatology, consistent with applicable Ethiopian licensing requirements.
  • Valid professional registration and current license to practice in Ethiopia.
  • At least 3 years of relevant post-specialization clinical experience in neonatal or newborn care.
  • Demonstrated competence in neonatal intensive care, newborn resuscitation, and management of neonatal emergencies.

Other Requirements

  • Willingness and flexibility to work at Assosa General Hospital.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to newborn survival, patient safety, professional ethics, and equitable access to specialized care.
