Neurosurgeon Specialist (On behalf of Benishangul Gumuz Health Bureau)
Medical Teams InternationalAbout This Role
This position places a neurosurgeon at a regional referral hospital in Assosa, where the case mix is shaped less by elective spine surgery and more by trauma — road accidents, conflict-related injuries, and delayed presentations from a wide catchment area. The employer of record is Medical Teams International, but the work itself sits inside a government hospital strengthened by EU funding, so you would be building a service rather than slotting into an established one. It suits a surgeon who is comfortable with high-acuity, resource-limited practice and who wants their skills to have visible impact on underserved populations.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The mid-level framing here is practical rather than rigid — what matters is demonstrated operative independence in cranial and spinal trauma, not years served. The mention of "available hospital facilities" is a quiet but important signal: the selection panel is looking for someone who can adapt technique to imperfect infrastructure rather than someone who needs a fully equipped tertiary theatre. Because the post serves refugees, IDPs, and host communities together, the ideal candidate is also someone who can navigate cross-cultural patient communication and work alongside non-specialist staff who will depend on their guidance.
How to Approach This Application
Your application should lead with concrete operative experience — types of trauma cases managed, complications handled, and decisions made when imaging or equipment was limited. Given the EU-funded project framing, note any experience working within donor-supported health programs or with humanitarian agencies, as this shows you understand reporting and accountability expectations beyond clinical duties. It is also worth addressing retention openly: this is a hardship-location posting, and a brief, sincere statement about your motivation to serve in Benishangul Gumuz will distinguish you from applicants who treat it as a stepping stone.
Who This Role Suits
Best suited to a surgeon with three to five years of post-specialization trauma experience who is genuinely willing to relocate to Assosa and work with limited resources. Competition is likely low compared to urban specialist posts, which means a well-prepared application has a realistic chance — but the role demands real commitment, not just a credential.
Under the EU-funded INTEPA project, MTI provides financial support to strengthen Assosa General Hospital's specialized healthcare capacity. This position aims to improve access to neurosurgical assessment, emergency management, and appropriate surgical treatment for refugees, internally displaced populations, and vulnerable host communities.
