Ophthalmologist Specialist (On behalf of Benishangul Gumuz Health Bureau)
Medical Teams InternationalAbout This Role
This position places you at the center of a hospital serving communities that rarely have access to specialist eye care—refugees, displaced families, and underserved host populations in one of Ethiopia's most remote regions. The work goes beyond routine consultations; you will be building a specialized service from a relatively thin base, which means shaping how ophthalmic care is delivered at Assosa General Hospital rather than simply slotting into an established department. It suits a clinician who is comfortable with autonomy and motivated by equity of access rather than prestige or urban convenience.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The mid-level seniority signals that the employer wants someone who can operate independently—not a fresh graduate needing supervision, but also not a consultant who expects a fully built support system. Three to five years of hands-on surgical and diagnostic experience implies they need a practitioner whose skills are already consolidated, because referrals upward will be limited in this setting. The emphasis on working "within professional competence" acknowledges that equipment and specialist backup may be constrained, so they are looking for someone who is honest about their limits yet resourceful within them.
How to Approach This Application
Your application should demonstrate concrete surgical volume and the range of ocular conditions you have managed, because the selection panel will be assessing whether you can handle the caseload alone. Highlight any experience serving refugee, displaced, or rural populations—this is central to the EU-funded project's purpose and will distinguish you from applicants with purely urban hospital backgrounds. If you have worked with limited resources or trained others in eye care, make that explicit; it speaks directly to the capacity-building dimension of this role.
Who This Role Suits
This role is best suited for an ophthalmologist who values mission-driven work in a hardship location and is willing to commit to a multi-year assignment. Competition is likely moderate—the location deters many candidates, but those who apply tend to be strongly motivated, so your motivation and adaptability will matter as much as your clinical record.
Under the EU-funded INTEPA project, MTI provides financial support to strengthen Assosa General Hospital's specialized healthcare capacity. This position aims to improve access to neurosurgical assessment, emergency management, and appropriate surgical treatment for refugees, internally displaced populations, and vulnerable host communities.
