About This Role

This is a hospital-based diagnostic role embedded in a humanitarian health project, not a typical private or research pathology post. You would be the specialist responsible for turning tissue and cell samples into diagnostic answers that guide treatment decisions at Assosa General Hospital, serving refugees, displaced people, and host communities under an EU-funded initiative. It suits a pathologist who wants their diagnostic work to directly shape patient care in an underserved region, and who is comfortable being one of the few — possibly the only — specialist of their kind on site.

What the Requirements Say About This Role

The mid-level framing with three to five years of experience signals that the employer wants someone who has moved past supervised training and can independently sign out reports without a senior pathologist looking over their shoulder. Because the hospital's service scope shapes what examinations you'll handle, the profile sought is someone adaptable — capable of working across histopathology and cytology rather than narrowly sub-specialized. The humanitarian context also implies they are screening for resilience and self-sufficiency, since referral options and peer consultation are likely limited compared to a teaching or referral hospital.

How to Approach This Application

Your application should lead with evidence of independent diagnostic responsibility — how many cases you have reported, in what settings, and with what level of supervision. Emphasize any experience working with resource-constrained laboratories or serving underserved populations, as this directly maps to the project's mission. Since the role operates under a funded project with defined reporting expectations, showing that you deliver timely, well-documented reports will matter as much as your clinical depth.

Best Fit

Who This Role Suits

Best suited to a pathologist seeking meaningful public health impact over academic prestige or urban convenience, and who is prepared for a remote posting. Competition is likely moderate — the specialist pool is small, but so is the number of professionals willing to relocate to Assosa, which works in a committed candidate's favor.

Under the EU-funded INTEPA project, MTI provides financial support to strengthen Assosa General Hospital's diagnostic and specialized healthcare capacity. The position aims to improve the availability and quality of pathology services, supporting timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment for refugees, internally displaced populations, and vulnerable host communities.
