About This Role
This is a strategic HR leadership position at one of the largest international NGOs operating in Ethiopia, where you would shape how the organization attracts and keeps its most valuable asset — its people. Unlike transactional HR roles, this job sits at the intersection of organizational strategy and human capital, meaning you would influence decisions that affect the entire country office. It suits someone who understands that in the NGO sector, talent management is directly tied to how effectively programs reach communities.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The seniority band tells you this is not an entry into people management — it expects someone who has already run recruitment cycles, handled performance conversations, and navigated the messy realities of staffing in Ethiopia's development sector. The breadth of the mandate (recruitment through succession planning) suggests they need a generalist who can move between operational urgency and long-term planning without losing either. Because Plan International operates under strict safeguarding and donor compliance frameworks, the ideal candidate likely has experience in environments where HR decisions carry ethical and reputational weight.
How to Approach This Application
Your application should demonstrate that you think about talent in terms of organizational outcomes, not just filling vacancies — cite specific situations where your hiring or development decisions improved team performance or retention. Plan International Ethiopia works across multiple regions and program areas, so showing you can manage competing priorities from different departments will set you apart. If you have experience with HR information systems or data-driven workforce planning, make that visible, as NGOs are increasingly expected to justify people decisions with evidence.
Who This Role Suits
This role is best suited for an experienced HR professional who has worked in NGOs, donor-funded programs, or large multinational organizations and is ready to own the full talent agenda rather than specialize in one area. Competition will be significant given Plan International's reputation and the limited number of senior HR roles in Addis Ababa's development sector.
