RFP: ESG Strategy and Investor Due-Diligence Recommendations Support
Birrama Digital Commerce PLCAbout This Role
This is a short-term consultancy for someone who can translate a pile of investor feedback into a workable ESG framework for an agri-tech product still in its early deployment phase. Birrama Digital Commerce is building IRIF, a sensor-and-AI advisory service for smallholder farmers in Oromia, and impact investors have already flagged what needs fixing. The consultant's job is to make sense of those recommendations and give the company a credible, proportionate ESG structure it can actually operate—not a glossy policy binder. It suits someone comfortable working at the intersection of development finance expectations and practical field realities.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The mid-level framing signals they want someone who has done this before but is still hands-on enough to do the analysis themselves—there is unlikely to be a team behind you. The profile being sought is less a pure ESG theorist and more a pragmatic generalist who understands how impact investors in the climate and agriculture space think, what they probe during due diligence, and how small companies fail to meet those expectations. Experience with donor-funded or P4G-type programmes would be a strong signal that you understand the reporting culture and stakeholder politics involved.
How to Approach This Application
Your proposal should show you have read the due-diligence context, not just the ESG brief—demonstrate a method for categorising and prioritising recommendations rather than offering generic ESG templates. Emphasise any prior work with smallholder agriculture, climate-tech, or impact investor reporting, and be concrete about deliverables and timeline given the consultancy format. They will likely prioritise someone who can move fast, work with a lean team, and produce something usable within the project's funding window.
Who This Role Suits
Best suited to a consultant with three to five years in ESG, impact investment advisory, or development programme compliance who can work independently and understands East African agri-tech. Competition is likely moderate but narrow—few candidates will combine ESG fluency with smallholder agriculture context, so a well-targeted proposal stands out.
Background
IRIF is a climate-resilient, AI-powered agricultural advisory solution being deployed by Birrama Digital Commerce PLC in partnership with Farm Africa, with funding from Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals (P4G) and cost-share contributions. IRIF combines low-cost soil and micro-climate sensor capsules with satellite data and AI-generated advisories, delivered by SMS/USSD to smallholder farmers in Oromia Regional State, to improve irrigation decisions, input use and yields.
Objective
To help Birrama act on investor due-diligence recommendations and set up a basic environmental, social and governance (ESG) approach for IRIF so that it is ready for impact investors.
Scope of work
- Recommendations. Review and categorise the due-diligence recommendations shared by Birrama by priority, cost and responsible person.
- Implementation support. Help implement selected recommendations, such as reporting practices or governance procedures, agreed with Birrama.
- Tracking. Set up and use simple internal reporting tools to track ESG and due-diligence progress.
- ESG document. Draft a basic ESG commitments document suitable for sharing with investors.
- Orientation. Deliver two half-day ESG orientation sessions for staff and partners.
Standards and expectations
- The ESG document must be realistic and proportionate to IRIF’s size and stage. Avoid commitments Birrama cannot keep.
- Progress tracking must be simple enough for staff to maintain after the assignment.
- Information received is confidential and shared only with Birrama.
Contract management and reporting
The successful applicant reports to the IRIF Project Manager at Birrama Digital Commerce PLC and attends regular progress meetings. A contract is signed with Birrama, and payment is made in instalments set out in the contract once Birrama accepts the completed work, less any tax required by Ethiopian law. All work products, data and materials belong to Birrama and the IRIF project. The applicant must keep project and farmer information confidential.
Eligibility
- A legally registered company with a valid trade licence and TIN, or an individual consultant with a CV and national ID.
- Applicants must declare any conflict of interest, including family or business links with Birrama, Farm Africa or P4G staff.
Qualifications and experience
- Experience in ESG, impact investing or investor-readiness work.
- Familiarity with common ESG frameworks and standards.
- Experience facilitating training for mixed audiences.
- Key staff must have the qualifications and experience needed for their role, shown in their CVs.

- Understanding of the assignment, proposed approach and work plan.
- Approach to the five tasks and an outline ESG document.
- References from similar assignments.
- CVs of the proposed consultant(s).
- CVs of the key team members and their roles in the assignment.
Financial proposal
- Prices in ETB, inclusive of all taxes, with unit rates and total price, valid for at least sixty (60) days from the deadline.
- The financial proposal is a separate document and must not appear in the technical proposal.
