Roving Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Specialist
International Medical Corps (IMC)About This Role
This is a field-heavy technical advisory post within one of the largest humanitarian health organizations operating in Ethiopia, where MHPSS has become a core emergency response pillar amid conflict and displacement crises. The roving nature means you are not tied to one project site — you move between field locations to strengthen mental health programming where it is weakest. It suits a seasoned practitioner who is equally comfortable designing psychosocial interventions and coaching field teams, and who understands that in humanitarian settings, technical quality often depends on logistics, security, and coordination as much as clinical skill.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The seniority band signals they are not looking for someone to execute a pre-set plan — they want a professional who can set technical direction, spot gaps across multiple projects, and translate global frameworks into something workable in Ethiopian field conditions. Expect the selection panel to weigh demonstrated experience in emergency or displacement contexts more heavily than formal clinical credentials alone. The roving element implies they need someone who has already proven they can operate independently, adapt quickly, and build relationships with local partners and government counterparts without constant supervision.
How to Approach This Application
Your application should lead with specific field deployments and what you changed on the ground — not a list of trainings attended. Because this role bridges headquarters strategy and field implementation, show that you can move between the two: reference moments where you influenced national-level guidance and moments where you sat with a field team to fix a real problem. Given IMC's scale and the sensitivity of MHPSS work in Ethiopia, demonstrate awareness of cultural adaptation and do-no-harm principles in your cover letter; generic psychosocial language will not stand out.
Who This Role Suits
Best suited to someone with five to eight years in humanitarian MHPSS who has already worked in at least two emergency contexts and is willing to travel extensively within Ethiopia. Competition will be strong — this is a visible technical role with a major INGO, and candidates with prior IMC or similar agency experience will have an edge.
